Therefore the Gatwick Airport plays hosts to millions of transit passengers every year. Apart from this there are the tourists who visit London each year. Tourists are pouring into London at any time of the year and the Gatwick Airport manages over millions of tourists per year that arrive in London. The airport has a single run way as well as a standby run way. The standby runway is only used when the primary run way is out of commission for some reason or is over used. The airport however mainly operates on the main runway. For this reason Gatwick Airport is known as one of the busiest single runway airports in the world today.
Gatwick Airport is being used as base for Charter airlines. Also many flights
from the US use Gatwick Airport as base. This is because of the various
restrictions on the other airports of the UK. The airport is primarily owned by
the BAA. However it has been decided that that BAA would sell the Gatwick
Airport . This is due to a report that was presented by the competition
commission that was against the domination of BAA. Some of the largest airport
groups of the UK are not planning to take over the air port and the airport is
currently valued at 1.8 billion pounds by the regulatory commission. The name
Gatwick comes from the manor that stood on the sight were the airport is now.
The manor is said to have existed in the year of 1241. There have been many
modifications that have been made to the airport over the years. This is mainly
because of the inflow of traffic into the airport. A circular pier was added to
the airport to accommodate for the growing population at the airport. This was
said to be the first of its kind as it was the first automated people mover
system in an airport of the country. This is today replaced by walkways which
are more convenient and efficient. There are two terminals at the air port
which are north and south. The Gatwick Airport has every facility that a
tourist passenger or a transit passenger would require.
