Millenium Bridge
One of the biggest tourist attractions to London every year is the Millennium
Bridge. This bridge was just completed in the year of 2002 completely after the
modifications. The Millennium Bridge which crosses the river Thames and links
the bank side to the city.
The bridge is an engineering marvel and has become a great tourist attraction
to the city of London. The bridge is owned by bridge house estates which are
charitable organizations that are controlled by the city of London. The bridge
gives a beautiful view over the river Thames and connects the two backs
together making the bridge a very convenient bridge for many pedestrians. The
bridge is for pedestrians alone. The bridge is a steel suspension bridge and
the design of the bridge was selected through a competition.
The bridge was built with its budget shooting above by about 2.2 million pounds
and the bridge releasing late by two months. However even after this the bridge
faced problems that had to be corrected immediately and the bridge was closed
down again to correct the problems in the bridge. After the problems in the
bridge were corrected the bridge was opened again in the year of 2002 and ever
since then the bridge has not shown any signs of problems. Being a pedestrian
bridge there is no sign of traffic anywhere and you can move along the bridge
comfortable as you take a walk and enjoy the beauty of the river Thames. The
number of people that were on the bridge was attempted to be restricted when
the bridge was opened new due to the arising problems however this did not
remove the problems of the Millennium bridge and the bridge was all together
closed down to fix the problems.
After 2002 when the bridge was reopened again no attempts to restrict the
number of people of on the bridge has been made. The problems with the
millennium bridge occurred due to an unusual condition which is known as the
synchronous lateral excitation. This condition arose because of many factors.
The condition occurred because the builders of the bridge did not account for
the movement of the bridge which was coupled with the movement of the
pedestrians. When the pedestrians first started using the bridge, they
experienced a wobble on the bridge. This was because of the positive feedback
of the bridge to the movement of the pedestrians on the bridge.
While building a bridge the load of wind, automobiles etc was considered but
the dynamic load of walking pedestrians was over looked by the builders which
make the bridge to resonate and the frequency of the people walking. The bridge
was then closed down to modify the resonance and after extensive study by the
engineers the wobbling effect of the bridge was completely eliminated. The
bridge however got its name as the wobbly bridge because of this problem. The
Millennium Bridge however is a spending bridge today which attracts tourists
form all over London to it.
